[edit] History
Before the events within Mirror's Edge, animated trailers reveal that Merc is one of an older generation of the Runners, as is Jacknife, but Merc never gave up his past "career" entirely. In the trailers, he is shown training Faith as a Runner after he catches her stealing from his Hideout, which Faith later confirms during an in-game cutscene.
[edit] In the game
During Mirror's Edge, Merc helps Faith and other runners during their missions. He does this via a (presumably radio) communications link to an earphone in the Runner's ear, from computer equipment in his hideout, which consists of a hollowed-out AC unit. His job has him find work and tasks for Runners, and he also assists them when in trouble with Blues or tackling complex locations. Merc also collaborate with Drake to find information and routes.
He resides in his Hideout, a large, modified air vent, where he and his colleagues (mainly Faith) lay low or live in. Merc does not appear in-game: there is no visual contact with him outside of the animated, non-Unreal Engine III cutscenes.

He is killed after the player completes Chapter 8. The cutscene following this chapter shows him to be fatally shot in the abdomen by Callaghan's men. In his last moments, Faith finds him under his overturned red couch with a B&T MP9. He tells Faith that he managed to take down a few of the men, and heard where they were taking Kate to The Shard. Before dying, he made Faith promise to "not let them win".
[edit] Name Origin
Derived from Roman Mythology, Mercury (associated with the Greek God, Hermes) was a messenger. In Mirror's Edge, Mercury is seen as the guide to Faith and directs her missions. Although he is not the direct messenger, he is seen as the prime messenger behind-the-scenes.
